Local women teaching others about essential oils

The practice of using plants as healing agents has been around for centuries. Historical cave paintings in France dating as far back as 18,000 BCE suggest people used plants every day for medicine.

Essential oils, derived from pressing and distilling of plants, are potent concentrations of the essence and properties of the desired plant.

Local women are advocating and sharing their experiences from daily use of essential oils. Margie McCall, MaryAnne McCall, Brittany McCall and others are hosting private parties to educate newcomers of the advantages of using essential oils, "as a way of living," said Margie McCall.

Margie McCall, essential oils

She initially became involved when she saw her daughter-in-law, Brittany, use essential oils to combat allergies her children were experiencing. Over time, both children were able to move off of prescribed and over-the-counter medications and were freed of the allergy afflictions. Essential oils helped her family reduce the health care costs associated with the medications.

One of MaryAnne's sons experiences motion sickness. Before discovering essential oils, car rides usually ended on the side of the road. Now, he asks mom for his bottle of peppermint, rubs it on his tummy, and lets the nausea subside. He even enjoys carnival rides, now.

There are three ways to apply essential oils. The first is to diffuse the oils into the air with a diffuser. The second is topical. Rub essential oil onto parts of your body (such as the bottom of your feet) because it is quickly absorbed into the body. And the third is to ingest the oils in veggie caps. [Disclaimer: essential oils which can be ingested have supplemental information published on the bottle. Not all oils can be ingested.]

Depending on the recipe, many oils can be combined together to achieve a specific result. To do so, a carrier liquid is needed for application. The most popular carrier is fractionated coconut oil but any other high quality oil is fine, said McCall. She said she has friends who use sunflower oil and it works just as well.

Essential oils need to be protected from light to be stored properly. The oils will last much longer in dark bottles. Also, McCall explained that plastic is not a preferred storage material unless it is a very high quality plastic. She said the essential oils will interact with the plastic and the properties of the oils will change. Many products are available online.

Sample Essential Oil

1 drop of Peppermint = 28 cups of peppermint tea

It will reduce fevers, combat headaches, help respiratory ills, address halitosis and it's invigorating. It will, also, help wake you up.
