President Elect Tina S. invited the director of the KHHS Community Partnership School (CPS), Tina Baker, to give the club an update as a new school year is underway.
The CPS hosted its second BOOST camp at Camp Montgomery this summer. Tina said the best part of camp was watching kids being kids. She said there was joy present, especially in students attending for the first time.
All of the students were selected as a result of being at-risk due to attendance issues, family dynamics or other concerns. This camp was the first time a full-time mental health counselor was present and, Tina said it made a huge impact in terms of building a trusting relationship with an adult. Many students don't have (that in their lives), she said.
There were two cases of head lice during the camp and both of the females involved supported each other through the process of ridding themselves of the lice. Tina said, there was no ostracizations of the other.
One of the data points the CPS is collecting are the number of signed student medical consent forms allowing staff to take students to medical appointments. Last year, there were 0 signed. This year, there are a total of 56 signed releases. At this time last year, 27 appointments had been made. This year, there have been 34 appointments (an increase of 23%). Tina said she attributes the increase as a result of building trusting relationships with students and parents.
This year, the partnership and administration are focusing on tardiness and attendance. She said, last year attendance was at 84% for the school year. The state target is 95-98%. The school is implementing a breakfast contest and the winning homeroom will get a "home-cooked" meal by a group like Kiwanis.
The CPS is partnering with Catholic Charities to provide backpacks with 2 days supply of food to homeless students. Tina said, they've identified 23 students.
The administration and CPS cabinet completed the Univeristy of Central Florida (UCF) certification process which establishes the school is a sustainable model of the four-core partnerships. Tina said, certification is expected in year five but KHHS finished the process in year three and scored higher in several categories than the self-assessed scores.
The financial literacy event will be hosted in December.
SEPTEMBER KIWANIAN OF THE MONTH
Mary Ann Kyle is the September Kiwanian of the month. Next week kicks of Terrific Kids, which she and Hank lead. President Patricia said in addition to Terrific Kids, Mary Ann has long served as the club's treasurer.
